St Mary’s Church: 900 Years in the making

St Mary’s church has been a central focus for the life and identity of the community of Witney for almost a thousand years.  Our forebears’ craft, worship, prayers and generosity have enhanced it to the greater glory of God.

Offering hospitality

Hospitality lies at the heart of our mission as a Christian church.  So, whether you are a visitor, pilgrim, or worshipper, attending a service or a performance, enjoying a Festival or exhibition,

We welcome all to the sacred space and community venue that is St Mary’s.

Committed to change

In the year 2000 St Mary’s church committed itself to the long-term, large-scale transformation of the building for the whole community of Witney.  This process is making the building fit for purpose, both as a place of worship and as a key community venue serving Witney and West Oxfordshire.  Over the last 15 years St Mary’s has successfully raised more than £750,000, in the process weatherproofing its windows and all but one of its major roofs.  We have also replaced heavy pews with lightweight, flexible chairs, improved the internal electrics, and transformed the ageing electronic organ into an instrument fit for this large medieval church.

We now face the most exciting challenge in St Mary’s modern life:

to re-imagine the interior of St Mary’s to make it a beautiful, comfortable, social space for 21st worship and community use.

Raise the roof

Severe winter frosts have destroyed the limestone slates on St Mary’s Roof. We need to replace them before winter sets in. Local Witney people have already sponsored 2,200 slates. Only 1,800 slates to go!!

Please Sponsor a Slate for £10. Your civic landmark church needs you!

Our stewardship enables us to fulfil God's call and share in God's mission

The Church is the new creation, it is life and joy, it is the sacramental fellowship in which we share the ultimate purpose of God, made real for us now in our hearing the Word and sharing the Sacrament.
